Alex T Smith
Alex was born in 1985 and has drawn and written stories since he could hold a pencil.
After considering several career options (space traveler, cake maker, professional rabbit) and working as a production assistant for an outdoor theatre events company, Alex decided to train to do the job he'd wanted to do since he was five - an illustrator specialising in the world of children's publishing.
Alex graduated with a 1st Class Hons degree in Illustration in 2006 and having won second place in the Macmillan Prize for Children's Picture Book Illustration in his final year, Alex begin working on his first commission as he put his degree show up! Since then Alex has gone on to work for a wide variety of clients not just in the publishing industry, as well as writing and illustrating his own picture books, many of which have won prizes and have been read on TV during the Bedtime Hour on the CBeebies channel.
Alex is also the creator of the CLAUDE fiction series for early readers. There are six titles published so far in 16 languages around the world, with another four books being worked on now for publication from April 2015. A TV series based on the adventures of the small, plump, beret- wearing dog is also in development.
He is the co-creator of the FOXY TALES series of chapter books with Caryl Hart, and has recently reimagined the world of Eva Ibbotson for the new issued covers of her best known and most well loved titles.
When not working Alex enjoys doodling in his sketchbook, reading, people watching and eavesdropping. He is also a big fan of cake and a nice cup of tea. He lives with and under the constant 'supervision' of his canine companions - two very tiny, very naughty chihuahuas (Coco and Mr. Bongo) and a wild eyed, scruffy puppy called Poppy.

Babette Cole
I was born on a little island called Jersey in 1950. I went to school in a convent where I spent most of my time drawing pictures and writing stories. I got fed up with school so I left and went to Art School at Canterbury in England. I left there in 1973 with a first class honours degree.
I made friends with Peter Firmin and Oliver Postgate who were making Children’s TV programmes for the BBC. They gave me my first proper job drawing for Jackanory and TV comics. Then, since I had some work published by the BBC. I could go to other publishers with my own books and finally got one published in 1976. It did very well so it wasn’t difficult to get books published after that because publishers knew I could make money for them.
The most famous one is called “Mummy Laid An Egg”. It sold a million copies! Since then I have written over 70 books!

Clara Vulliamy
Born in Notting Hill, London, quite a while ago.
I’ve been drawing since forever – there’s never been anything else I wanted to do. Just possibly it runs in the family. As a child I didn’t notice that that my Mum was (and still is!) Shirley Hughes. To me she was just my Mum.
First I did illustrations in newspapers and magazines. I started doing books for children when I had children of my own, and when the children grew up somehow the books never did. I’m absolutely hooked on picture books. It’s the most amazing piece of theatre, where words and images play merrily together and anything is possible.
And now I live in Twickenham with my husband and two grown-up children, and I work in a room at the top of the house overlooking the treetops and back gardens. Here I am, drawing and painting and cutting and sticking, or staring out of the window dreaming up stories… it’s very quiet and peaceful, which I love – except when I accidentally rustle a plastic bag, which sets off a cacophony of squeaking from the guinea pigs who also live here and think everything is a lettuce.

Guy Parker Rees
One of my earliest memories is of a huge Kudu antelope sticking his neck in the car window to try and gobble up our sandwiches.
I was born in Zimbabwe and I can still remember the smell of the huge, hot granite rocks. My older sister, my two brothers and I came back to a cold grey England when I was three.
I spent a lot of my time at school doodling and painting, then did a degree in English and Philosophy at York University, where I spent a lot of time painting and doodling.
I worked as a mural painter, an arts and crafts teacher and as an art therapist, among other things, before finding out that I really wanted to illustrate children's books.
I've been lucky enough to work with some of the best writers of children's books. When a story is good, ideas just leap into my head and all I have to do is scribble them down.
I am very proud of the fact that "Giraffes Can't Dance", written by Giles Andreae, has gone on to be such an international best seller. It is such a wonderful story. Equally, the fact that several of the books I've illustrated for Tony Mitton have won awards which were voted for by children is very satisfying.
I like to convey feelings in my work by using a vibrant, bouncing line, strong colours and getting expressions just right. I find it very exciting when it all comes together. Oh, and I like drawing lots of animals too.
I enjoy doing school visits to talk about how I illustrate and do some drawing with the audience. I live in Brighton with my wife and three children. It's a half hour walk across the park to get to my studio, which I share with three other illustrators.

Mark Chambers
Mark was born in Aberdeen on a cold and windy day in 1980 and shortly afterwards moved to warmer climates down south in rural Lincolnshire.
Although he wanted to be a professional golfer, chef, fighter pilot and master Lego builder (not all at the same time) he found that his skills were much more suited to becoming a professional doodler. He graduated with an Illustration degree in 2003 from University of Lincoln and is now represented by Bright Group International. He works from a studio which is a short walk from his house and shares it with a lobster, a Mogwai and a giant prawn. Mark has managed to secure picture book deals with publishers such as Templar, Little Tiger Press, Simon & Schuster, Usborne, Knopf and Random House. He was selected to illustrate for the Bear With Me traveling sketchbook project and is also the creator of Daily Doodle.'

I decided to pursue my interest for illustration that I had since I was a child. I moved to England and I joined

it was the BEST decision I have ever made. Since I graduated, I'm working as an illustrator in London and it makes me feel so lucky and happy.

Paul Thurlby
Originally from Nottingham, now based in London, I have been a full-time illustrator since September 2006 after graduating from University in Buckinghamshire, England. I hold my pen in a funny way but it works just fine for me, thanks. I’ve built up an impressive list of commissions working in editorial, advertising, publishing and T-shirt design for clients including The New Yorker, The Guardian, TateEnterprises, It’s Nice That, The French Tourist Board, Templar Publishing, Orange UK and Warner/Chappell.
The inspiration for my work comes from mid-century designand illustration. My style has been described as being retro-modern. The aesthetics are retro and the subject matter is modern. I use old books, postcards and pieces of paper for the backgrounds to my illustrations which often, for example, involves buying an old book from a charity shop just to use its back cover.
